Welcome to grade 2! We are so excited to be starting another school year. Your children are adjusting well to the new routines, and we are enjoying getting to know them all. We have just a few reminders: Curriculum Night is Monday, September 11th at 6:00 in the auditorium to meet with Mrs. Polselli. After the meeting you will then be directed to the classrooms where we will give a short presentation on classroom expectations. We look forward to meeting you and telling you all the exciting things we have planned in grade 2!
Gym will be held each Wednesday. Students should wear their gym uniforms to school, on this day. Please print your child’s name on the inside of the sweatshirt so that there will be no confusion as to the owner of the uniform. Reminder: Please have your child bring a pair of sneakers to school. Students will change the sneakers in the gym to protect the floor.
The focus for the first month of school is on community. The objective is to help children identify their sacraments of Baptism membership in the Catholic Church and parish community through the celebration of sacraments, especially the initiation and Confirmation.
In Science we will discuss in detail the rock cycle, how rocks are formed, the three types of rocks, and the uses of rocks.
Throughout the school year, we will be focusing on several different themes. There will be opportunities for parents to come into the classroom and share in students’ active learning, as we finish each unit of study. Learning Centers are one of the most enjoyable learning experiences in the second grade for both children and parents alike. During the month of September we will focus on the theme of friendship. Students will explore the topics of cooperation, caring, love, observation, and the world in which we live.
Students will have nightly homework this year, which is a little different from first grade. Homework will be due the following day. No homework is assigned on the weekends. There will be some school projects given during the school year. These will coincide with students’ learning in science and social studies. Students and parents will be given advanced notice of due dates, and a clear format will be given for each of these projects.
Spelling words will be introduced on Mondays. Students are encouraged to review their words during the week. A spelling test will take place every Friday.
Printing will take place periodically throughout the week. Students will practice printing the letters of the alphabet. This will ease them into beginning form of cursive writing.
Students will become familiar with “The Reader’s Club Program”. This is a program where students should read at least five nights a week for 15 minutes a night. They will have club cards that will be marked each week. Forms will follow with more information on this topic.
